ATLANTA, GA - Jan. 26, 2011 -- At the 2011 International Poultry Expo, U.S. Poultry & Egg Association recognized six poultry farms to receive the annual Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award. The award is given in acknowledgment of exemplary environmental stewardship by family farmers engaged in poultry and egg production."The poultry industry has long been recognized as a leader in environmental management," said newly elected Association chairman Gary Cooper, Cooper Farms, Oakwood, OH. "We must continue to be reliable stewards, using new technology and current management practices to do our part in preserving a clean environment. Our family farm environmental excellence competition is just another way to highlight our commitment."
Applicants were rated in several categories, including dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques, and participation in education or outreach programs. Applications were reviewed and farm visits conducted by a team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies, and state trade associations in selecting national winners.
Winners were chosen from six geographical regions from throughout the United States:
Southeast Region – Huneycutt Brothers' Family Farm, Albemarle, North Carolina
Todd Huneycutt, Rodney Huneycutt and Melvin Huneycutt, nominated by Pilgrim's Pride Corporation
South Central Region – Plemmons Farm, Iberia, Missouri
Roger and Coleen Plemmons, nominated by Cargill Turkey Production
Southwest Region – Maxim Production Company, Boling, Texas
Chris Reina, nominated by Texas Poultry Federation
North Central Region – Shoemaker Farm, Burlington, West Virginia
Tim and Carole Shoemaker, nominated by Pilgrim's Pride Corporation
Northeast Region – Lucky Charm Farms, LLC, Weyers Cave, Virginia
Bud Shaver Jr., nominated by Pilgrim's Pride Corporation
West Region – Mitchell Farms, Elk Grove, California
Ken Mitchell, nominated by Foster Farms
